JOB SUMMARY: The Cost Accountant supports the financial operations of the hospital by performing cost accounting functions and assisting in the preparation of the facility’s financial statements. This role includes budget preparation, forecasting, benchmarking, and administration of the Costflex accounting program. Reports directly to Accounting Supervisor and indirectly to Controller. Non-exempt position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cost Accounting Analysis:

- Performs cost analysis and develops recommendations based on past and present financial performances.
- Assists Charge Master coordinator with updates to ensure appropriate cost to charge ratios.
- Administers and maintains the accounting system to support internal decision-making and reporting.
Financial Reporting:

- Assists in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), GASB and healthcare industry standards.
- Generate financial reports for internal stakeholders, including management and senior leadership.
- Provides monthly profit and loss reports for leadership. Conducts internal audits and researches variances.
- Updates allowance worksheet, moving ratios, and revenue statistics monthly.
Budgeting and Forecasting:

- Assists in preparation, coordination, and implementation of the hospital’s annual operating and capital budgets.
- Collaborates with department managers to gather budgetary data, review historical trends, and forecast future needs.
- Maintains and updates budget modules and tools, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
4. Lease Accounting/Contract Management:
o Evaluates contracts to determine applicability and classification under GASB 87 and GASB 96 standards.
o Records and reconciles right-to-use assets and lease liabilities in accordance with GASB requirements.
o Tracks and accounts for lease modifications, renewals, terminations, and impairments, ensuring timely updates to the general ledger.
5. Compliance and Audit:
o Manages cost accounting functions in compliance with facility policies and procedures.
o Provides support during external audits and with the Medicare Cost Report.
o Assists with internal audits, fact checks and resolving discrepancies.
o Assists Controller and Accounting Supervisor with various accounting policies and procedures.
- Customer Service and Organizational Support:
o Serves as a financial resource for internal departments by providing timely, accurate, and understandable cost and financial data.
o Responds promptly to budget or cost analysis requests from department managers, clinical leadership, and administration.
o Educates non-finance staff on cost accounting principles and financial data interpretation in a clear, professional manner.
- Schedule Requirements:

- This position requires the employee to be present at the hospital typically from 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
