Reports to: General Manager

The Field Club of Greenwich is a preeminent family racquet club in the town of Greenwich. The Club is a welcoming, family-oriented, member-owned social club with an extraordinary spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. Amenities include 8 outdoor Har-Tru tennis courts, 5 grass tennis courts, 2 indoor tennis courts, 4 platform tennis courts, a premier squash facility, fitness center, large pool complex with a poolside café, and a full-service Clubhouse.

The club is looking for a strong financial leader who would act as a business partner for the General Manager and be capable of providing critical data and analysis for the department managers, committees, treasurer and board as necessary. The club seeks an individual with strong analytical skills and who also has experience managing the HR aspect of the role.

Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for leading the day-to-day finance operations of the club, including the preparation of the Annual Operating and Capital Budget. The controller will also have functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing and all related software applications. The controller will ensure that Field Club has in place the best systems, practices, internal controls and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. In addition to finance, the controller will also oversee HR, including benefits, payroll, onboarding, development, Simple IRA plan, compensation and compliance. The Controller will report to the General Manager and work directly with the Treasurer of the Club’s Board. The Controller will attend all staff meetings, Finance Committee meetings, and Board meetings on an ongoing basis, and other meetings as required by the GM.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manages all financial functions, including, but not limited to, general accounting, capital and operational budgeting, federal and state taxes, payroll, cash management, financial reporting and analysis.
  • Prepares budgets and financial forecasts in coordination with the various departments, analyzes financial information, monitors budgeted versus actual expenditures and advises management about variances and their potential causes in a timely manner.
  • Prepares monthly reports for presentation to the General Manager, Finance Committee, Executive Committee and Board of Governors.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of applicable federal, state and local tax returns.
  • Verifies that all insurance records for club property are maintained.
  • Works with the club’s external auditors to ensure that procedures are consistent with club policies
  • Ensures legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements.
  • Maintains employee benefit programs.
  • Handles all technology needs for the operations of the club.
  • Onboards new employees & maintains historical human resource records.
  • Ensure proper and accurate revenue deposits, make bank deposits as needed
  • Reconciles monthly ledgers including receivables, payables, bank accounts, asset accounts and wage accounts.
  • Safeguards all funds in bank accounts and reviews daily bank balances.
  • Facilitates the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Handles assigned projects as they relate to the department and club’s needs.
  • Maintains Fixed Asset ledgers and prepares depreciation schedules for monthly entries.
  • Assists General Manager with Negotiations of employee benefits, including health and life insurance, pension plans and workers’ compensation.
  • Monitors collection of past due accounts, advises the General Manager and the Board when difficult situations may arise.
  • Maintains Investment Account and prepares Yield Schedule.
  • Assess, hire, train, mentor, and develop accounting staff to build a strong, high-performing team.
  • Evaluates and enhances IT infrastructure, manages recommended improvements.
  • Oversee technology implementation integrated with internal control policies to ensure cybersecurity.

Requirements

  • Degree in Finance/Accounting
  • 5 years of financial management experience, including supervisory experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent financial accounting and analysis skills
  • Competency in Excel and Word
  • Country Club experience or hospitality industry experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of Jonas software and Microsoft Office Software is a plus
